Coat of Arms of the Georgian Cities

These coat of arms were designed and given to the Georgian towns in the late 19th Century after the establishment of the Russian administration in Georgia.


Akhalkalaki - town and stronghold in the southern Georgia

Akhaltsikhe - a major town in the southern Georgia.


Batumi - capital of Adjara
Meaning: wavy line and anchors -  Black Sea coast; three golden circles - Byzantine coins for a well developed ancient trade port

Dusheti - town in  Kartli, near Tbilisi.
Meaning: trees symbolyze vast forests surrounding the town; smaller coat of arms are those of Tbilisi for the proximity to capital.

Gori - one of the major towns in Kartli
Meaning: The tower symbolyzes the great fortress of Gori, once considered one of the imregnable strongholds in the Caucasus; the grains stands for well developed agriculture.

Kutaisi -  a major city in Western Georgia
Meaning: Kutaisi is legendary city of Aia in Colchis celebrated in the Greek myth of the Golden Fleece. So, the symbol of Golden Fleece features on the coat of arms.

Odishi and Redoubt-Kale - two minor towns in Western Georgia
Meaning:  two-headed eagle symbolzes Russian empire; the tower stands for the fortress of Redoubt Kale, while the bull's head is a sacred animal in Georgian mythology.

Oni - a town in northwestern Georgia.
Meaning: the upper part contains the Golden Fleece indicating to the towns location in ancient Colchis; lowers part has image of mountain goat on a rock symbolyzing Oni location on the Great Caucasus Range.


Ozurgeti - town in Western Georgia
Meaning: in the center, St. George perceing the dragon; in the upper left part, the Noah's Arc; lower part - widespread grape cultivation in Guria.

Poti - a major port town on the Black Sea Coast
Meaning: upper left corner -  Golden Fleece stands for the arrival point of the Greek Argounauts; tower symbolyzes ancient fortress; the wavy blue line and anchors stand for the Black Sea coast

Shorapani - a town in Western Georgia
Meaning: Golden Fleece indicates to the town's location in ancient Colchis; castle stands for the fortress previously located in the town.

Sighnaghi - major town in Eastern Georgia
Meaning: ploughshear - welldeveloped agriculture.


Tbilisi - capital of Georgia
Meaning: the cross with two hands over on the crescent - union of Russia and Georgia (Christian nations) to overcome Ottomans and Persia; The Black Cross over the Red Lions carries same meaning because Lion was state symbol of Persia.

Meaning: grape leaves stand for a wide-spread wine industry.
